One area of plant biology that I haven't gotten the chance to really explore yet is biochemistry, and more specifically, secondary metabolites. Throughout college, I took multiple organic chemistry courses and a cell biology course, but none of these classes focused on plants specifically. In fact, the information I learned about plants while taking these courses was merely anecdotal.

The only course I took that drew me to become interested in this subject was Plant Pathology (PLB 111), but the class was so chock full of information that I didn't feel like I had the time to really get into it.

The three main groups of secondary metabolites are terpenoids, phenolic compounds, and nitrogen and sulfur containing compounds. I hope to explore the plant families these compounds can be found in and the uses they have to both the trees and the organisms that use them.
